How to Look Like a Bad-Ass Biker this Fall
Crisp days and longer nights. Cool enough to wear a hoodie and boots, but not so cool that you'll need a puffy coat. And nobody did it better than The Queen of Bikers: Gemma Teller (aka Katey Sagal in her Sons of Anarchy roll).
Katey, in real life married to Sons creator Kurt Sutter, is not actually involved with motorcycle gangs (that I know of anyways)- but she sure had one great wardrobe while on set. Tank tops layered with plaid and lace, jewelry, leather jackets and those boots gave the perfect image to match her character's attitude
- which was fearless.
Side Note- You don't have to go far or wait days for these fashions to arrive. You don’t even have to spend a lot either if you don’t have these styles in your closet already - head on over to ThreadUp.com, put in your sizes & preferences (mine are set at NWT & Nearly New), then shop away!
As one of the world’s largest online resale platforms for women’s and kids’ apparel, shoes, and accessories, ThreadUp’s mission is to inspire a new generation of shoppers to think secondhand clothes first. You can shop like-new and used women’s clothes and kids’ clothes at up to 90% off estimated retail at their online thrift store and consignment shop. From Halston to Harley, they have all your favorite brands (including Lululemon, Anthropologie, Madewell & more!) for less. Plus, enjoy thousands of arrivals every day.
In fact I went on a “Downton Abby” themed day-cruise with our local PBS station. The entire outfit I’m wearing - hat, dress & shoes - were all found on ThreadUp.
It’s no secret that you’ll often feel good when you know you look good, so fashion (or style) can play an important role in maintaining a positive self-image. It’s even been proven in science: A study published in 2012 in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology showed how the clothes a person wears can influence psychological processes.
See?? So, why not embrace a full biker bad-ass dress while wandering around with your gang this Fall?? Don't be scared- just roll on the throttle and go with it.
The Relaxed Fit Plaid Shirt:
Bring a slightly oversized (but not sloppy) look with the Relaxed Fit Plaid Shirt. Believe me when I say this layer is soft and lightweight. This long sleeve top goes perfectly over a skinny tank and distressed jeans.
Caution- Soft Shoulder:
A “cold-shoulder” is the "it" tee for Fall. The washed cotton, lace yoke and button placket lend a familiar, worn feel to this top. A special touch- faded graphics encircle the hem.
The Tall Boot:
A fan favorite, the women's leather riding boot is tall & knee high, with a heel or without, might even be lace up with iconic appeal and classic heritage styling.
A little-bit higher now:
The short boot with heel gives you that lift, both in body and spirit. A chunky heel supporting a 5.5-inch shaft with an ankle strap. I think these boots were pulled right out of Gemma's closet.
Essential for Layering:
Perfectly faded with raw-edges for a worn-in look, a Pullover Hoodie has that distressed look for a vintage vibe.
The quintessential Leather Jacket:
Worn by icons like Marlon Brando in “The Wild One,” the first motorcycle leather jacket was introduced in 1928. Born from function, and yet their fashion is more than evident - it’s road ready!
The Future is so Bright, You Gotta:
Yup, I went there! Sunglasses can give you self-confidence from “hiding” behind them. From your micro-expressions, to your personality… You might not be necessarily trying to hide emotions, but one of the effects of wearing dark glasses is that your eyes are hidden from view.
The way that Katy was dressed for her role as Gemma Teller-Morrow in Sons of Anarchy is a sexy biker/rock chick. She’s is a singer in real life, so she has that whole Stevie Nicks thing going. And yet Katy/Gemma is still age appropriate and definitely not slutty.
Who ever said that a 60-year old has to wear elastic-waist Crimplene slacks and “sensible” shoes?
